Frozen Harvester
Hard-surface sci-fi environment design, from the monolithic structure and surface detail to the lighting, fog and atmosphere.
A cinematic sci-fi environment illustration for a private client’s tabletop role-playing world. The brief called for a single hero image of a large, weathered research outpost in a frozen mountain valley, and the client wanted it to feel like a still from a feature film.

Scope and Design Direction
I interpreted the brief as a hard-surface environment piece. A monolithic fortress-like structure on angled supports serving as the centrepiece, detailed with panels, hatches, cabling and machinery so it reads as a working, lived-in facility. Supporting elements include a radio tower, antenna masts, a floodlight tower, a drone robot and more.
Mood and Visual Style
The atmosphere is cold, isolated and quietly menacing, set in heavy fog and light snowfall. A desaturated blue-grey palette is broken only by warm practical lights: an orange control-room window, floodlights and amber markers. The composition leads the eye from the lit window to the guards, then across the structure, with layered mountains fading into mist for depth.
Texturing assets.
Having a large amount of assets used in this project, each textured in a unique way within Substance 3D Painter. Furthermore the use of Substance Sampler to generate detailed sci-fi textures from Ai (Midjourney) images was crucial. Almost every asset required a snow layer, developed through world space position, dirt layers and hand painting.
Modelling assets.
Modelling the assets used in this project took strong inspiration from sci-fi tv shows. The base as a whole being based on the harvesters seen in DUNE. Most assets built for this project were intended as medium poly assets modelled within Blender. The exception of the snow soldiers having been modelled in Zbrush.
